The first European settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, attracted by the fertile land and the potential for agriculture.
One of the earliest settlers in the area was a man named Henry Scott, who established a ranch near the present-day location of Scottsbluff in 1871. The ranch served as a stagecoach station and a stopping point for travelers heading west.

The region proved to be ideal for farming and ranching, especially for growing sugar beets, which became one of the major crops in the area. The establishment of irrigation systems, such as the Scottsbluff Irrigation District in 1907, further contributed to the agricultural success of the region.
